# 12 The Recipients of the Gospel – Part 2

  # 12 The Recipients of the Gospel – Part 2

By Pastor Bill

In 1 Timothy 2:1-4, Paul exhorts us to pray for all men, and for kings and those in authority. He concludes by saying, “This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” God’s desire is for all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Some theologians have taught that God chose some to be saved and for others to go to hell. (In Reformed Theology, it is called Limited Atonement.) This Scripture directly contradicts that false teaching. God’s desire is for all men to be saved.

In 2 Peter 3:9, we are told that the Lord is not slow about His promise (His return to gather the saints), as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” Notice again that God does not want any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. This refutes the false doctrine that God wants many to perish and only wants to save some. The gospel message is for everyone because God wants alJesus is the Wayl to come to repentance.

In 1 John 2:2, we find that “He Himself is the propitiation (satisfaction) for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” Jesus paid the price for all of our sins, that is, the sins of everyone in the world. He has made a way for all men to be forgiven and have eternal life. That is good news (gospel) for everyone.

Finally, we find in John 3:16 that “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” God loves everyone in the world. He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, as a payment for the sins of the whole world. He has made it possible for whosoever who believes in Him to have eternal life. Whosoever means whoever hears the gospel and puts their trust in Christ for salvation. The gospel message is for everyone.

Father, give us a burden for the souls of all men. Help us be a church that preaches the gospel to all men. Give us opportunities to share the good news with the poor, with the captives, with the blind, and with the oppressed. May we be a people who pray for all men, because You “desire for all men to saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
