# 15 The Need for the Gospel – Part 2
By Pastor Bill
In Romans 3:9-12, we find that “that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God; all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none who does good, there is not even one.” Paul is quoting from Psalm 53:1-3, and Psalm 14:1-3. All of us are under sin. It does not matter what ethnical background you are from, all peoples and ethnic groups are under sin. Both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin. The entire world is under the burden of sin. All are weighed down with this sin.
Because we are under sin, we are not useful to the Lord. Paul says that we are useless. He goes on to say that none of us does good, and none of us seeks for God. Humanism tells us that man is good; he is okay. But the Scriptures tell us that none of us are good, or does good. We are all under sin.
The term under sin implies that there is a burden upon us. In fact, sin is a burden. It is a burden that we are not able to lift off of ourselves. In Psalm 38:4 David writes, “for my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.” David recognized sin as a burden that was too much for him to bear.
In Galatians 6:1-2, Paul writes that we are to help restore those who have been caught in a trespass. We are to bear one another’s burdens. In this sense, a burden is a struggle that a person has with sin. A person who is under the weight of the burden of sin needs those around him to lift the burden off of him and cast it on the Lord. (See Psalm 55:22.)
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “come to me all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you…for My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Jesus wants to take the burden of sin off of everyone’s life. He says, come to me ALL who are heavy-laden.” Everyone in the world is heavy-laden with the burden of sin. Jesus wants to free all people of this burden of sin.
Father, help us to see the burdens that people are under. Help us to be a church that shares the good news that You have come to remove that burden from everyone. Help us look at people with compassion, and to help them cast their burden on You. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
