# 5 Boldness to Preach the Gospel (Part 2)

By Pastor Bill

Chains for ChristIn Acts 4, we saw that when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we gain a Holy Spirit boldness to share the gospel. The Scriptures also talk about another source of boldness for sharing the gospel. In Philippians, Paul is writing to the Philippians while in chains in Rome. He is under house arrest and is chained at all times to a Roman soldier from the Praetorian Guard. Paul writes them so that they would know about his circumstances, and how they have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel. (He was more concerned about the gospel than his circumstances.) He also wanted them to know that because of his imprisonment many people had far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. The King James Version says, “waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.” When people realize that it is okay to suffer for the gospel, they have more confidence or boldness in sharing. When people see the faith and boldness of others, it encourages them to be bolder.

(Phil 1:12-14)  “Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, {13} so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, {14} and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.”

Paul was encouraging the Philippians to be bold in sharing their faith. A few verses later he exhorts them to conduct themselves in a manner worth of the gospel, and to stand firm in one spirit, striving together for the faith of the gospel. He shared his personal experiences and suffering with them so that they would become bolder.

(Phil 1:27)  “Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.”

Father God, may we stand firm in one spirit, striving together for the faith of the gospel. May we have more courage and boldness to share as a result of Paul’s example of suffering for the gospel. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
