# 1 The Mandate to Preach the Gospel
By Pastor Bill
In Mark 16:15-16, Jesus commands the disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. This was not an option or a suggestion. It was a mandate. The dictionary defines mandate as: a command or authorization to act in a particular way or an authoritative order or command.
(Mark 16:15-16) (Memory Verses) “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
In Matthew 28, Matthew quotes Jesus as saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” Jesus is telling us that He had all authority to give the orders or the mandate. His mandate was that we go and preach the gospel.
(Matthew 28:18-20) (Memory Verses) “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore…’”
If God has given us a command to go and preach the gospel, why is it that we struggle with evangelism? For one, most people do not view themselves as evangelists, and they do not feel it is their responsibility to preach the gospel. They are correct in one sense; most people are not evangelists. However, Jesus commanded all of us to preach the gospel. Not everyone has the gift of giving, but all of us are commanded to honor God with our tithes and offerings. Not everyone has the gift of service, but all of us are commanded to serve one another. Our gifting does not exempt us from obeying God’s mandate to preach the gospel.
Another reason that people do not preach the gospel is they do not feel prepared or equipped. That is a legitimate concern, but it still does not exempt us from obeying. God is calling our church to preach the gospel in the East Mountains. We are studying the Gospel of Luke, and we will be learning much more about preaching the gospel. In the coming months, I will be sharing each week on evangelism in the bulletins. I am also giving verses for us to memorize that will help equip us to share the gospel with others. Let me encourage you to take serious the mandate to preach the gospel. Read the bulletins. Memorize the Scriptures that are given. Pray for opportunities to share the gospel. Pray for fresh anointing from the Holy Spirit and for boldness. Most of all, begin to apply what you are learning; preach the gospel.
Lord, may we be a church that is obedient to you. May we be a church that takes serious Your command for us to preach the gospel. Give us courage and boldness. Help us bear much fruit for You. Amen.
