# 14 The Need for the Gospel – Part 1
By Pastor Bill
In this series we have looked at the mandate to preach the gospel, the empowerment to preach the gospel, the boldness to preach the gospel, and the eagerness to preach the gospel. We have also defined the gospel, and the recipients of the gospel. In the next few inserts we will look at the need for the gospel. We will start by looking at Romans 3:23, which is a great memory verse.
Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” In Genesis, Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed. They were covered with the glory of God. The Hebrew word used here is arom, which conveys nakedness with innocence. They were without sin, and could be in the glory and presence of a holy God. However, when they sinned, they realized they were naked, and tried to clothe themselves. This time, the Hebrew word, erom, is used. This conveys a spiritual nakedness along with a natural nakedness. They were no longer innocent, and could no longer stand in the presence or glory of a holy God. They were no longer naked and unashamed; they were naked and ashamed.
They made clothes of fig leaves to cover their groins. But, when the Lord came to them, they hid from the presence and glory of God. The covering of fig leaves was insufficient. The works of man could never cover the sins of man. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us that it is by grace that we have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Our fig leaves and other works to cover our sinfulness cannot restore our innocence and allow us to be in the presence and glory of God. Therefore, God made garments of skin and clothed them (Genesis 3:21). Like Adam, all of us have sinned. All of us fall short of the glory of God. All of us have a need to be covered from the shame of our sins. The picture of the animal sacrifice to make a covering for their sins is a foreshadow of the sacrifice of Jesus the Lamb, who became a covering for our sins.
Who needs the gospel? All of us need the gospel because all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. All of us have a need to be covered and clothed in the garments of Christ. Everyone we meet that has not yet received Christ, and has not been clothed in Christ’s righteousness, is in need of the gospel.
Lord, help us to be ever mindful that everyone is in need of the gospel. While some may appear to be in less need, all fall short of your glory and need to be clothed with Your righteousness. Help us boldly share the good news of Your covering for our sins with those You bring into our lives. Amen.
