# 16 The Need for the Gospel – Part 3
By Pastor Bill
We saw that when man sinned, he fell short of the glory of God. We also saw that sin brought a burden upon man. Christ forgives us of our sins, and makes provision for us to enter into fellowship with God. He also removes the burden of sin from our lives. We have the opportunity to share this good news with others.
Sin also brought death. In Genesis 2:16-17, God commanded man not to eat from the knowledge of good and evil, and if he did, he would surely die. Sin brought death. Sin set in motion the process of physical death. More importantly, it brought spiritual death. It brought a separation of man from God. Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:1, “you were dead in your trespasses and sins.” All of us were dead in our trespasses and sins. Unfortunately, in this dead condition, we would be permanently separated from God for the rest of eternity. Our physical lives are temporal, but our souls are eternal. Because of our sin, we are eternally separated from God.
The good news of the gospel is found in John 10:10b. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” When we receive Christ into our lives, He forgives us of our sins, lifts the burden of sin off of us, and causes us to be born spiritually. He gives life to our spirits. In Christ, we have eternal life with God. Jesus said in John 3:14-15, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.” When we receive Christ, we receive eternal life.
John wrote in 1 John 5:12-13, that “he who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” God wants you and I to know that we have eternal life. Jesus came to give us life, eternal life with the Father, with Himself, and with the Holy Spirit.
Father, I thank You for coming to give us life. Thank You for eternal life. Thank You for an abundant life. Help us to be aware of the people around us that do not know you, that they are dead in their sins. They are eternally separated from You. Help us be a church that brings the good news of an abundant life with you. I ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
